Well, now the much anticipated transfer window is closed. As a Man Utd fan, the business done by our beloved club has been met with mixed feelings. the acquisition of Memphis (one of the brightest young talent in Europe last season) was met with great optimism by me and a couple of my man Utd supporting mates. watching his goals and free kicks with PSV reminded us of CR7 himself (as a budding talent), although he’s still a diamond in the rough, we hope he’ll get polished and come good soon.
Then came the arrivals of Darmain, Schweinsteiger and Schneiderlin in a single weekend! saying i was ecstatic would be an understatement. Even rival fans green with envy tried to mask it all with talks of Schweini being brittle and other blah blah… “all we need now is a striker and a centre forward” many mused. but then came the question, how many top strikers in the world will improve our side? I looked around and the ones i thought of are next to impossible to get at the moment. Aguero will never play for us, PSG is relying on Cavani for the future (as Ibra is getting old) Lewandowski and Muller are the other two options i would have loved but i think even though Bayern would have wanted to sell us either(cos i’m sure the money on offer attracted them) but they don’t want to be perceived as a selling club thereby incurring the wrath of their fans. Benzema to me is not exceptional, forgive me (especially Arsenal fans who believed him to be the Moses who’d take them to the promised land that is the EPL title) for not believing too much in him, but to me he’s at most a 7/10 type of striker on his best days while those i mentioned earlier are between 8/10 and 9/10. Everyone believed we need a new central defender, but personally i think we have more than enough. we conceded so many goals last season not because our defence was abject but because of the poor state of the midfield and the recurrent change in centre back pairings (caused by our bad luck with injuries). Everyone of our central defenders look decent (of course apart from Evans) and this season, barring any injury bad luck and a solid midfield , we should be one of the best teams in the league defensively come may.
The only problem i think we have now is our attack. Rooney, i think has forgotten how to be a poacher. He has played in midfield for so long that all his killer instincts in front of goal has been traded for long passes and organized ball retention. I doubt if he’ll be capable of playing as a lone striker anymore. The others in attack are expected to chip in some goals to help the team. Memphis, i think is struggling at the moment, but i expect him to adapt to the league sooner rather than later and show the world why he was alotted the sacred number 7. At the end of the season, i expect him to have notched nothing less than 10 league goals. Rooney should manage at least 15 goals and another 15 goals from our midfield players. Mata should equally manage 15 goals comfortably (remember he’s our penalty taker now) while the defence should contribute with over 10 goals of their own.
Then, this brings us to the most discussed transfer of the deadline day, Anthony Martial. i first became aware of his existence last season (when Arsenal played Monaco). Before the match, i read that an 18 year old kid had usurped Berbatov as the club’s main striker and i was kinda surprised at how much Berbatov’s stock has fallen, not thinking maybe the said boy was any good until he assisted Berbatov’s goal on the said night. i didn’t even bother about his name until Tuesday (September 1) when we signed him for a ridiculous amount. Yes, ridiculous because at the moment all he is, is a raw talent and nothing more. I even believe had we given our own very young striker (wilson) the chance, he can do a similar job, if not better. But i want to believe the coaches know what they are doing. The fact that other clubs were also interested (clubs like Barca, Tottenham, Chelsea, etc) and Monaco’s reluctance to sell him can only imply that the boy is good (at least to an extent). But still yet, the price we paid was definitely on the “too high” side. I hope we end up paying the whole fee (with all the add ons) cos that will mean we he ends up justifying his price tag (by winning the balon d’or) before 2019
The season so far has been okay, we’ve made progress from last season’s start, and i think we were unlucky against Newcastle, and Swansea is turning to be a tough nut to crack for us (just like Tottenham was a while back). Nonetheless, i expect us to win a cup and finish 2nd this season (though my heart says higher). The only team i think maybe is stronger than ours is Man City’s. Chelsea might not even make top four if they are not careful and Liverpool really turn up their game. It’s the international break last weekend and i hope all the lads return injury free. Glory Glory Man Utd!
